CHARLOTTETOWN — A study that has been ongoing for the past 15 years, with over 25,000 responses and thousands of interviews of Islanders from the age of 18-65, has determined that Combo A is the best traditional Island meal at 2:30 AM.
Research scientists at UPEI report that 68% of responses stated Combo A is the meal most associated with PEI at 2:30 in the morning. A further 8% of responses were similar, with the only difference being “Combo A with red sauce on the side.”
COMBO A! COMBO A! COMBO A!
Typical survey response
“What struck us most was the aggression and slurred responses that were associated with ordering this plate of Chinese food,” says Hans MacLean, associate researcher at UPEI’s Department of Recent History.
“Many of the text surveys were submitted in all-caps, and most of the phone surveys were yelled into voicemail, or so full of expletives that it was nearly impossible to understand.”
MacLean hopes to continue studying this phenomenon, and has applied for future funding to continue studying traditional 2:30 AM Island meals.
Among other top responses, 14% stated “a huge, dried-out slice of pizza,” 8% suggested “just, like, a big bag of fries,” and less than 1% of responses contained any sort of nutrition whatsoever.
