BETWEEN CHARLOTTETOWN AND STRATFORD — Local commuter Skip Matheson, known for his tall tales, remembers a simpler, gentler time in the Island’s history where the bridge connecting Charlottetown and Stratford allegedly had only two lanes for vehicle traffic.
“It wasn’t that busy, because Southport wasn’t that big.”

“It sounds pretty unbelievable, but it’s true. There was only two lanes. Course, it wasn’t that busy, because Southport wasn’t that big,” explained Matheson. “I should also say that Stratford wasn’t a thing back then either.”
He went on to explain that the bridge had no pedestrian lane, and that no one has any pictures of this because cell phones weren’t invented back then.
“And another thing — there wasn’t all this traffic before they made the bridge this big. If we want to go back to a kinder, simpler, gentler Island, we should look at bringing back the old Hillsborough bridge.”
Matheson was later seen writing a letter to the editor suggesting that two lanes of the current bridge be set aside for parking to watch the cormorants and starlings on the bridge.
