Celebrating the first 400 years of Islander Day

A selected timeline

1609 — King Henry IV of France, recognizing that l’ile St. Jean would one day be the 10th most important province in Canada, declared that everyone should have a long weekend during the coldest month of the year. Doing this earned him the nickname “Good King Henry.” Thanks Henry!

1610 – 1990 — Nothing really happened, except TV. That was pretty cool.

1996 — The Confederation Bridge opens, allowing Islanders an easy way to import canned pop.

1997 — A petition starts circulating on the burgeoning World Wide Web, demanding an extra day off in winter. The sheer amount of internet traffic generated knocks GeoCities.com offline for a week.

2001 — Haywire reforms, which is everyone’s favourite Island band, so that’s nice.

2009 — Islander Day becomes a real holiday, letting most grown-ups have one extra day to sleep in.
