Room for more: Could PEI support a fourth county?

A study by a local independent think tank has proposed PEI could and should obtain another county, leading to a new era of economic expansion.

It has long been the dream of PEI politicians of all stripes to expand the current three counties to include a fourth as-yet-unnamed territory.

“How has no one else thought of this before?”

Flemmerman

This study from the Institute for PEI’s Future Prosperity suggests that the Island should consider adding a fourth county as soon as possible to allow further golf courses, potato fields, roundabouts and condos.

“Sure, why not?” said lead researcher Julie Flemmerman. “It’s not unheard of for provinces to expand.”

As Flemmerman states, there are three possible ways to increase PEI’s county count.

“We could divide one county into two, but honestly, that’s the lamest option. A second option is to forcibly take territory from another province, but that gets messy — especially since we have no armed forces, and is technically illegal.”

“But the third option is way more cool. What if we, like, poured a bunch of sand in the Gulf of St. Lawrence? Like… a lot of sand and rocks and stuff. We could make the Island so much bigger!”

“How has no one else thought of this before?” asked Flemmerman.

The biggest challenge noted by the study, aside from the massive labour requirement of dumping trillions of tons of material into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, is adding a fourth tiny tree on the Island’s flag.
